The choices we make: Young person look out!

It was during the Youth service of 2015 when Pastor Mukhuba taught the youth about making choices. Young people are faced with challenges that they need to overcome and they have to make choices. When you wake up in the morning you are faced with choices that you need to make. You have to decide whether to get out of bed or not. If you do get out of bed, you decide whether to brush your teeth or not and whether to take a bath or not. The pastor addressed some of the challenges that young people face and advised the youth to make good decisions based on the commandments of God. Regardless of the challenges that they face, they must choose a life in Christ and live according to His ways.

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:1: Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them” (NIV)

The word of God speaks to young people, that they should remember their Creator. Christianity is not just for the old people, but for everyone including the youth. Young people need to know that it is dangerous to keep on postponing giving one’s life to Jesus. Sometimes in old age, a person can fail to make the right decisions because his mind is affected by his age.

Even in Deuteronomy 30:19, it is said: “…I have set before you today life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life…” God wants us to choose life and blessings but He gives us the right to choose. He does not force us to do anything. Some people want to avoid to be responsible for their choices in life and they would say why God not decides for them. Know that God has given man the freedom to choose between life and death and between blessings and curses. Obedience to God’s word will bring life and blessings and disobedience will result into death and curses.

One of God’s principles is found in Galatians 6: 7-8 “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” From this we learn that everyone shall reap what they sow. Everyone should then understand and make a decision on whether to sow to please their flesh or to please the Spirit. We can choose ways that destroy or build up our lives for a bright future. A man shall reap what he sows. Some young people say “we are still young, and we will live any way we desire” and they forget that they are sowing seeds for their tomorrow in whatever that they do. If you sow goodness, you shall reap goodness and if you sow evil you are going to reap evil. You cannot live carelessly and expect to have a good future.

Choices that young people are faced with in everyday life

You choose to study or not to study.

Education is very important in one’s life. It opens doors of success. A young person can choose to study hard and be a successful somebody or they can choose to focus more on their social life. Some young people have problems because they are addicted to social media. They are clueless when it comes to their studies but are professionals on social sites. Such people are not dumb; they are just investing their energies in the wrong places, where they will reap destruction. If most of your time is spent on negative things such as social media you will reap the benefits thereof. There are young people who are not focusing on their studies at all. They are busy on their phones and computers day and night. This affects their progress in life. God wants you to use your time wisely and profitably. Some youngsters do not rest at night because of all these activities and they are tired during the day. Some go to tertiary institutions being Christians and when they get there they backslide and even their studies suffer. They no longer study, they get involved with things that distract them from their studies.

You choose to stay pure or to succumb to peer pressure

Many people are failing in life today because of listening and wanting to fit in with friends. They do wrong things because they want to be accepted by the crowds. It is possible to survive peer pressure if your life is submitted to God. A life of pleasing friends does not bring any success. Many are taking drugs today because of friends. Many are drinking alcohol and many are fornicating not because they want to, but because of wanting to please friends. Some become party animals as a result of that and they end up losing their lives. Some join gangs just to please friends. Know who you are and make good choices so that you can enjoy the blessings of God throughout your life.

Choice of music that you listen to

There are different kinds of music that we are exposed to in this world. As a young person, what kind of music do you listen to? Do you listen to the music that feeds your flesh or that feeds your spirit? Some young people get possessed because of the kind of music that they listen to. They cannot concentrate in class because the music always plays in their minds. The Bible says that if you sow in the flesh, you shall reap death, but you shall reap eternal life when you sow to please the Spirit. Some people know nothing about Gospel music but they master the worldly music. For what you hear shall influence your actions and your behaviour. Choose to feed your spirit and not your flesh. In Daniel 1:8-17, the Bible says that Daniel and his friends became very successful in Babylon after he refused to defile himself with the food of the king. Choose what is different from what the world is doing. Do what God wants you to do and God will not let you down. Young people want to be seen to know all the new songs of the world and to know more about those who are called superstars in music. Do not be enticed by things that are not benefitting your spiritual life.

A choice of TV programs to watch

There is a lot of immorality that is promoted on television these days. One really needs to be selective on what to watch. The devil is using TV to promote sexual immorality, witchcraft, etc. Homosexuality is presented as something fashionable in soapies. Witchcraft is also promoted, and if one keeps on watching programs that promote such things, one might end up being influenced by them. Stay away from TV programs that promote ungodly living. Remember whatever investment you make you will get the dividends thereafter.

A choice to obey your parents or friends

You choose whether to obey your parents when they teach the correct and godly way of living or to listen to the wrong things your friends tell you to do. The Bible teaches us that we should obey our parents in the Lord (Ephesians 6:1). Obedience to parents is a commandment of God. You need to honor your father and your mother so that you can live long. There are many young people who are dying prematurely today because they chose not to listen to the wise advice of adults. Those who are disrespectful to their parents end up dying young. Jails are full of young offenders who refused to listen to godly teachings. Hospitals are also full of young people who are dying of sicknesses they contracted because of refusing to obey this commandment of God. Young people, stay away from bad friends. Remember, “…bad company corrupts good character” (I Corinthians 15:33)

A choice to fornicate or not

Sexual sins transmit demons from one person to another. 1 Corinthians 6:18, says that whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Many young people are opening doors for the devil to torment them through their bodies because they refuse to get out of fornication. God hates fornication (premarital sexual intercourse), which is sin of having sex with somebody that you are not yet married to. It might be acceptable in your society and amongst your group of friends but it is not acceptable in the eyes of God. Many choose to be with boyfriends and girlfriends and they end up closing up doors of success for themselves. You are committing a sin of fornication when you are sexually involved with a person who did not marry you. Even when he has paid a portion of the pride price (lobola), if it has not been settled in full or you have not signed at the home affairs as husband and wife, you are fornicating. It does not matter how long you have been staying together or how many kids you already have.

Some get involved in these inappropriate relationships that may lead to pregnancy, even worse in termination of the pregnancy. After you have made such a choice you will not only lack peace but you will have become a murderer at a young age. Your future is affected by the choices that you make. Some might think they are clever by using condoms to prevent AIDS and pregnancy; unfortunately condoms can never prevent demons from possessing you. When you engage in pre-marital sex, whether you use condoms or not you have opened a doorway for demons and they will block your success in the future. However those who are going to hear the word of God and they decide to go against it shall be cursed. If you do what is right, you shall reap the benefits.

Choose to wait on the Lord’s provision.

You have to make a decision to wait on Gods’ provision. There are young people who are faced with poverty and whose parents cannot afford the basic things. How do you handle such a situation? Do you trust in the Lord or do you decide to join a gang and become a criminal if you are a young man or became a prostitute if you are a young lady? Whatever you decide, there is always a price to pay because your choices will determine what you will become in life. If you choose to do evil, then the devil will rule over your life, block your success and bring suffering to your life. Subsequently, if you choose to do what is right; the Father in heaven will be very pleased and in turn He will bless your life. Also remember that you are going to give an account about your life when Jesus comes back.

A choice whether to worship God or idols

Many young people are faced with a challenge where they are forced to worship ancestors in their families because their parents worship ancestors. Those who do not oblige face the risk of being disowned by their parents. However you should remember that obeying the Lord’s command comes above all things. Therefore refuse in a respectful way to do things that are contrary to Christian values and the Lord will never forget you.

A choice to walk away from Satanism.

You will meet peers who will try to recruit you into witchcraft and Satanism. Be warned; do not get involved or be too curious about the spiritual world because you will get entangled in evil things. Have nothing to do with the evil deeds of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). The predicament is that young people are curious and they want to experiment with everything, even with dangerous involvements such as witchcraft and Satanism. Safe guard yourself and stay away from such things, do not destroy your life because of curiosity.

Choose not to love money too much.

The Bible says for the love of money is the root of all evil (I Timothy 6:10). Young people these days have a desire to be wealthy without working hard for the riches. If you want to be wealthy then follow the right procedure, first get educated, then get a job or start your own business. Do not be deceived by people who will sell you dreams. What is the use of having a house that is under the sea where no one can visit you or a car that you do not drive during the day? Be aware of the times that we live in and be wise, this world is deteriorating in morals and excelling in evil. Regardless of the wickedness in this world choose a righteous standing.

Choose to be selfless like Christ Jesus

When we read 2 Timothy 3:1-5, it says that “…There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” We learn that we are living in vile times, where prayer is a forbidden practise in our schools. People have turned into treacherous lovers of themselves, which is why the world has become very corrupt. This world needs young people who are selfless like Jesus Christ, who will care about the needs of others above their own. We need politicians and parliamentarians who fear the Lord. This world needs God fearing law and policy makers, who will not remove Christmas and Good Friday holidays from the calendar. The world needs young people who will be blessed to be a blessing to others.

Young people are the future of the nation; therefore it is a wise decision for them to choose to live according to the word of God. If our young people can choose to fear the Lord, then things will change in our nation. We will then have a prosperous nation that is led by God-fearing people. There are many enticing things in this world, walk away from them for the sake of your future. Do not invest in things that do not last. Make choices that will benefit you irrespective of what your peers are doing. God will reward you for your faithfulness in Him. Serve the Lord with reverence and walk away from the evil deeds of the enemy. Choose friends that will encourage and build your life. Psalm 1:1-3, says “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams
