Scripture Reading: Isaiah 44:6-28 “…Those who make an image, all of them are useless, and their precious things shall not profit; they are their own witnesses; they neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed. Who would form a god or mould an image that profits him nothing? Surely all his companions would be ashamed; and the workmen, they are mere men. Let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, they shall be ashamed together…” (NKJV)

The Lord is the Sovereign God who created all things. He reigns supreme and He is the beginning and the end of everything. Apart from Him, there is no other God. These were the words spoken by God Himself, wanting to set the record straight at the time when idolatry had become a continual snare to the Israelites. The people kept turning away from the true God and carved images to worship them. In this chapter of Isaiah, the Lord displays the utter absurdity of trusting in idols. His intense description of these practices exposes the foolishness of men who take the things that He has created and turn them into gods.
This foolishness of idol worship did not stop during the time of the Israelites however; people still continue walking in such blindness even in his day. Such practices are very rife within our African continent. Many families have raised altars and erected small images and bow down to them. Some people even service them by preparing special food and drink to feed them. What kind of a god gets hungry and demands food from those who serve him? Some families even keep goats and worship them as their gods. The funny part is that, they end up slaughtering the very same goats during certain rituals. Why would you want to worship a god you would eat at the end of the day?
God says these things have eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear and hands that cannot deliver anyone. So, if God says this, who do you think responds when those things are spoken to? Of course the devil! There are always demons behind every idol. Hence people who practice such things experience terrible suffering. When people start fellowshipping with the devil through idols, God leaves because He is a holy God who does not share a place with demons. Hence such families and nations become a playground for the devil and his demons. The devil torments them by causing premature deaths, sicknesses and stagnancy.

Most African families practice ancestral worship, which is another form of idol worship. They believe that the spirits of the dead live on in the natural world and influence the future and fortunes of the remaining living relatives. They believe that these spirits are mediators between them and God even though the bible says that there is only one Mediator between man and God and that is Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).The surprising thing is that the people who suddenly become their gods when they are dead were not even highly regarded while still alive. Some of them are neglected throughout their lives and when they die, they suddenly become revered gods.

But you as a child of God are urged to refrain from such practices. Instead, you ought to continue praying against such foolishness in a very aggressive manner. Do not stop praying because the priests who handle the altars of ancestral worship in your family are not happy because your Christianity is blocking their activities. The spirits that were perpetuating premature death, sicknesses and other sufferings have gone back to torment the people who sent them because they cannot operate in your midst anymore. You have put a stop to their party and there is nothing they can do about it. However, they are waiting for you to backslide and renounce your God so that they can attack you and remove you out of the way. They want you dead so it is very important to continue praying to keep the devil out of your life.
Child of God, do not be fooled into thinking that ancestral demons that you cast out give up and leave for good. Jesus says that when an evil spirit leaves, it goes and takes seven more spirits more wicked than itself (Matthew 12:45). When they find that a Christian has backslidden, they invade and dwell in that person and their final condition gets worse than before. This is the reason why you must not give the devil peace. You have taken a good stand of receiving Christ and fighting against the ancestral spirits in your family. Do not stop praying against such spirits until the eyes of your family members get opened. Do not stop demolishing ancestral altars until all your family members receive Christ and do not allow yourself to be enticed back into those things. Hold on to your God until all your family members join you!
