A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.” “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes. Scripture Reading: Mark 9:17-29 (NIV)

In the scripture cited above we learn of a man who brought his demon possessed son to Jesus. The boy was afflicted by a spirit that left him mute. When it took hold of him, it threw him to the ground violently. He would foam at the mouth, grind his teeth and his body became stiff. We learn that the man had brought his son to Jesus’ disciples before, pleading with them to deliver his son, but they could not cast out the demon. Out of desperation, he then went to Jesus asking if He could help his son. Jesus replied that anything is possible to one who believes. The father of the demon possessed boy then said “I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief.”

We all encounter challenges that often weigh us down and leave us desperate like the father of this boy. However, our attitude to those challenges is more important than the crisis itself. The good thing is that God knows all our problems and He wants to help. He is an All-powerful God who is able to relieve that burden from your shoulder, no matter how heavy it is. His power is not restricted by anything. He is able to reverse all the works of the devil in our lives.

It is therefore important to go before Him believing that He is able to intervene in your case. Unbelief cannot please Him. The Bible says without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). We learn that the boy had suffered with that condition since his childhood. However, Jesus was able to deliver him in an instant. Even with you child of God, it does not matter how long you have suffered. The Lord is able to heal that sickness the doctors declared incurable. You just need to believe Him wholeheartedly and not restrict Him. When you doubt and question His abilities, you are restricting Him.

The Bible says the disciples later on asked Jesus privately why they could not drive out the evil spirit. Jesus told them that kind of demon can only be driven out by prayer (Verse 29). There are certain stubborn situations that can only be overcome through persistent prayers. Prayer and faith go hand in hand; you cannot pray if you do not have faith in the Lord. Thus, your faith shall be expressed through constant communication with God. If you are in a desperate situation that needs the Lord’s intervention, I urge you to go before Him in prayer and believe Him for a change. Refuse to be like Thomas who did not believe that the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the other disciples until he could see the wounds on His hands (John 20:24-29). You should approach Jesus with faith like the woman with the issue of blood (Matthew 9:20-22) if you want change.

In Mark 5:21-43 we are told a remarkable story of how Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead because of her father’s stubborn faith. Jairus believed Jesus even after he was informed that his daughter is dead. Even with you child of God, the Lord shall give you a good report regarding that situation you were told is impossible only if you do not doubt Him. You need to believe Him even in difficult situations. Unbelief is the greatest obstacle to your miracle. The father of the demon possessed son believed and he experienced a great miracle. Beloved, believe the Lord today and He shall prepare a table before you in the presence of your enemies (Psalms 23:5). He wants to show off His goodness to the world through you.

Child of God, the Lord is for you and will help you in any adverse situation. He has given you two wings of a great eagle, so that you may fly above your challenges (Revelation 12:14). However, you just need to believe Him to overcome them. May the Almighty God help you overcome unbelief in Jesus Name!
