Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice Scripture reading: Genesis 22:15-18 NKJV

Gates are symbols of spiritual authority. To possess means to have power and authority over something. In ancient biblical times, gates were very important places. They were part of a city’s protection against invaders, hence the exits were securely surrounded by fences. Gates were places of central activities where political, commercial and business transactions were conducted. They were also market places where farmers came to buy and sell.

At the gates of a city, courts of justice were frequently held by wise elders who would judge matters. They would make policies and give counsel to the rulers of the city. Even prophets would come and declare the Word of God by the gates. By this, we can see the important role that was played by the city gates in ancient biblical times.

Today, through Jesus, we qualify to take over the gates of our enemies. To control the gates of one’s enemies is to conquer their city. Part of Abraham’s blessing from the Lord was the promise that “your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies” (Genesis 22:17).

When we talk about the descendants of Abraham, we are referring to those believers who live by faith. Through faith in Jesus, you are also blessed and you are an heir to Abraham’s inheritance according to the promise (Galatians 3:26-29.)

My brethren, we qualify to receive that which was promised to Abraham. When God referred to Abraham’s descendants, He was including you and me. Therefore, we have power and authority over the gates of the cities of our enemies.

May you be empowered to take over the gates of your enemies, in Jesus' name, Amen.
