Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you Scripture Reference: Exodus 23:24-25 (NIV)

When you get into a contractual relationship with someone you get into a covenant, you get into a close relationship with that person. There are terms and conditions that govern the relationship and one should abide to those terms. God created us the same way; He wants us to have a close relationship with Him. When Adam sinned against God in the Garden of Eden, he broke the relationship and brought separation to the relationship. However, by taking the Israel out of Egypt, God restored that relationship. God chose the Israelites to be the people whom He wanted a close relationship with, and thus having a close relationship with us.

Before they could reach the Promised Land, God gave the Israelites set of rules or commandments on how to conduct themselves in order to remain connected to Him. Even when they got to Canaan, God gave them set of rules on how to conduct themselves. The Lord promised the Israelites great rewards only if they worshiped Him as their true God. He promised to bless them with food, rain, fertility, and long life. These were reasonable conditions attached to His promises. He told the Israelites not to worship the gods of the Canaanites, but they should utterly overthrow them.

Like in the case of Abraham in Genesis 12, God’s calling came with great promises. However the promises came with instructions. Abraham was going to be blessed only if he moved from what was familiar to him, his country and his family. Indeed, Abraham was blessed because he chose to obey God’s precepts. When God chooses you, He will not just relate with you, but will give you principles that you have to abide to for you to remain connected to Him

God commanded the Israelites not to bow down to the gods of the Canaanites if they want to remain connected to Him. Child of God you have to be obedient to God’s commandments if you want to remain connected to Him. Many people do not want to be told about their sins. When reprimanded they say you are judging them. However our relationship with God is governed by following God’s commandments and leading holy lives. If you really want to remain connected to God and see yourself flourish, then submit to the Lord’s commandments.
